Walasse Ting – Parrot Jungle

NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale

November 9, 2023 – March 12, 2024

“Walasse Ting: Parrot Jungle” is an exhibition that reintroduces audiences to the vibrant world of artist Walasse Ting (1928-2010). Known for blending ancient Chinese aesthetics, European avant-garde, and American Pop Art, Ting remains a pivotal figure in art history. While recognized for his book “1¢ Life” (1964), the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale is the first in America to showcase his broader mastery in a dedicated monographic exhibition.

The exhibit immerses viewers in Ting’s colorful visions of women, flora and fauna. It also narrates Ting’s life, marked by a transnational identity free from traditional artistic ambassadorship. South Florida, a frequent destination for Ting due to family ties, serves as a fitting honorary home for this exhibit. His visits to the region, especially to the wildlife park Parrot Jungle, significantly influenced his work, inspiring numerous photographs and drawings.

This exhibition also connects with the Museum’s extensive CoBrA Collection, which includes key works by Ting. The CoBrA movement, known for its emphasis on freedom, spontaneity, and experimentation, deeply resonated with Ting, shaping his artistic journey and fostering lifelong friendships with CoBrA artists. Celebrating Ting as a global citizen, the exhibit highlights his unique and passionately enriched oeuvre.

The exhibition will be on view from November 9, 2023 – March 12, 2024
