Walasse Ting (1929-2010)
On view from 17 May
Gallery Delaive is pleased to announce an upcoming exhibition showcasing the later works of Chinese-American painter Walasse Ting (1929-2010) from the 1980s. The show will feature a vibrant selection of pieces that offer an in-depth look into Ting’s practice during his ‘Amsterdam period.’
Ting, a curious and open-minded character, easily formed connections with others, bringing people together. This was evident when he met Nico Delaive in a serendipitous encounter in Amsterdam. The two quickly became friends, and Nico began selling Ting’s work. Ting would later introduce Nico to other artists like Sam Francis and Tom Wesselmann.
The works featured in this exhibition reflect Ting’s unique personality and the art that naturally sprang from his temperament, character, and lifestyle. His Modigliani-inspired women, bright animals, and blooming flowers showcase his love for life, warmth, and beauty. Each piece, though distinctly his, surprises with its composition and delightful details, such as coffee cups, desserts, flowers, and parrots.
Ting was deeply aware of art history but emphasized the importance of intuitive taste over intellectualizing art. As he once said, “Mostly people just look at paintings. If they like them, they like them; if not, then so be it.” This perspective was central to his work and also reflected Nico Delaive’s approach, which may explain their strong bond.
Free from pretensions, Ting’s art was instinctive and fluid. His works were often created rapidly, as if every brushstroke was an extension of his breath. He once described his process as “making love to his paintings,” resulting in a sensual symphony of colors. This gave his work a universal quality—like the arrival of spring or the warmth of human connection.
This exhibition offers visitors the opportunity to experience the sincerity, warmth, mischief, and eccentricity that defined both Walasse Ting’s life and his art.
